Externship:D.A. Philadelphia

Prerequisites: Evidence (LAW 7024) and Trial Advocacy (LAW 7050) or Trial Advocacy - Basic Intensive (LAW 7128); Note: Evidence (LAW 7024) is a prerequisite for Trial Advocacy (LAW 7050) and Trial Advocacy - Basic Intensive (LAW 7128) - Evidence and Trial Ad. may be taken concurrently with the Externship. However, not all Trial Ad. sections allow concurrent registration with Evidence, see Trial Ad. course descriptions for details. Restrictions: 3L ONLY COURSE for Fall semester; 2L and 3L COURSE for the Spring semester. Special Requirements: Student Certification - Student Certification Forms can be found on the VLS Externship website in the "Forms & Documents" section under "Program Information" called: "Student Certification Form." Completed forms should be returned to: Priscilla Holmes, Associate Director for Academic Affairs in the Deans' Suite. Students may enroll on NOVASIS. No prior approval is required if all prerequisites are met. Students must have completed three semesters of law school to be eligible for this externship.

The Philadelphia District Attorney's Office Trial Externship is a practice course designed to give students courtroom experience prosecuting real crimes in Philadelphia's Municipal Court, a high volume and high- pressure courthouse where thousands of cases are handled every year. During the semester, students will interact not only with members of the Judiciary before whom they will appear, but also with opposing counsel, witnesses, and victims of crime. The students start the semester with a 2 day intensive training period, after which they will go to court to handle preliminary hearings in felony cases. In the middle of the semester, the students will have another half-day intensive training session before going to court to conduct misdemeanor trials and suppression hearings.
