LAW 7201 :
Bus and Fin Literacy for Lawye

Restrictions: 1L Mandatory Module Week - Registar's Office will enroll students in this required course for the Winter Term starting in October. Basic business and financial literacy is regularly required of today's practicing lawyers. This innovative one week learning module builds this literacy. Carefully crafted in consultation with business and financial leaders, and taught by these leaders, this module provides valuable lessons including the time value of money, financing options, valuation of property, and income and expenses. Beyond learning to read a financial statement, this specifically tailored problem based course allows students to exercise creative problem solving, strategic thinking and professional judgment, practice effective communication with clients and opposing counsel, and learn to work effectively with colleagues and senior attorneys. Using reality based scenarios that call for business and financial literacy -the purchase of income producing real estate, the sale and purchase of a business - this module provides the platform necessary to identify and understand the business and financial issues inherent in today's practice of law.
