Business Aspects of Law

Restrictions: 2L Mandatory Module Week - Registrar's Office will enroll students in this required course for the Winter Term starting in October. Understanding the business of practicing law has never been more important. The structure and personnel of a law firm, the economics of a law firm and how to properly budget and manage legal projects are all topics that today's legal graduates need to understand to effectively operate in the legal market. This innovative one week learning module focuses on these critical topics. Crafted in consultation with legal management leaders, this module provides valuable insight into: legal management structures as used by the sole practitioner to large international firms, law firm personnel and their roles, how a time sheet becomes revenue and its relationship to direct expenses and overhead, the basic concepts to budgeting legal projects including time, staffing, technology, experts and others, and no less important-workload project management-how to stay on track, stay in budget and stay efficient. Through original lectures and useful hands-on exercises specifically tailored to what graduates need to know, this dynamic course offers practical lessons in the business of practicing law.
