LAW 7151 :
Environmental Lawyering

This course will use real-world hypotheticals based on environmental law topics to develop practical lawyering skills such as negotiation, risk evaluation, transactional drafting, and client communication. Students will be divided into teams and be asked to role-play as environmental attorneys in (1) negotiating and drafting an agreement of sale for contaminated property; (2) retaining an environmental consultant to conduct due diligence; (3) managing environmental/tort claims arising after the completion of the sale; (4) researching substantive legal issues and presenting findings/recommendations to the client; and (5) handling the complex ethical issues relating to the above situations. Although environmental law will be a common theme, environmental law is not a prerequisite for this class and the coursework touches on multiple areas of the lawincluding real estate, contracts, and corporate law. Students will be introduced to the substantive law needed to fully and actively participate in the simulations. Grading will be based entirely on quality participation in the role-playing exercises and class discussions on substantive legal topics. This course is typically offered on an every other year basis.
