CSE Inst: Internal Field Place
Note: Instructor approval required for enrollment. In the Institute to Address Commercial Sexual Exploitation (CSE Institute) students work in a collaborative environment to combat sex trafficking and related forms of commercial sexual exploitation. The work performed by students in the CSE Institute involves (1) externally-focused projects with our partner institutions, (2) externally-focused projects for the education of the general public; (3) off-site activities and trainings, and (4) internally-focused administration of the CSE Institute. In the process, students will obtain practical experience, enhance legal research and analysis skills across both criminal and civil matters, learn basic advocacy skills, gain confidence in their own abilities, and make a real impact on the law addressing commercial sexual exploitation in Pennsylvania and beyond. While providing legal analysis and engaging in legal and policy advocacy, students will examine the roles and professional responsibilities of lawyers, social justice advocates, and policy-makers through first-hand experience. Importantly, students will also gain experience in working directly with and learning from survivors of sex trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation. While most of students' work for the CSE Institute will be performed in collaborative teams, students will also participate in 2-3 hour weekly business meetings of the CSE Institute. These meetings provide an opportunity for students to collaborate in exploring issues of strategy, legal analysis, effective advocacy, and professional ethics. Students will complete at least 135 hours of work over the 13-week semester. Registrar's Office will receive list of accepted students and send details for enrollment before the end of the Add/Drop period.
