Regulation of Financial Insts
The subject of this course is government regulation of financial institutions, with a particular focus on federal regulation of banking activities and the financial service activities of banks. The course covers the legal structure of the financial services industry (particularly banking), the formation and expansion of banks and bank holding companies, and the competition banks face from nonbank competitors. Specific topics include: consumer financial services, including the emerging role of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, bank regulatory enforcement actions, the expanding activities of banks, federal preemption, fair lending and anti-discrimination laws, bank mergers and acquisitions, the resolution of failed banks, personal liability of directors and officers, anti-money laundering, and the role of banks in combatting criminal activities. Industry professionals may be invited to present guest lectures to provide a "real world" perspective on the financial services industry today. This course is offered on an every other year basis.
