Civil Rights Litigation: Enforcing the Constitution This course explores federal statutory remedies available to persons deprived of a constitutional right. A significant portion of the class will be devoted to litigation under 42 U.S.C. § 1983, the statute which provides a federal civil remedy for constitutional deprivations. Our study of § 1983 will include not only the elements necessary for a plaintiff to state a viable § 1983 claim but the immunities and defenses that circumscribe plaintiffs' § 1983 remedy. We will approach these issues from both doctrinal and critical perspectives. Exam Info: Exam administered during exam period. This course is offered every other year.
