Athletic Coaching Certificate

This 15-credit certificate program, which can be pursued as a stand-alone certificate or in combination with a MA in Education, is designed for students who are interested in athletic coaching at the middle school, high school, or collegiate level as well as those who currently serve in such roles. Students in this program will learn how to develop a thoughtful leadership ethic and coaching philosophy, foster a positive team culture, and build a program that nurtures athletes’ character, wellbeing, and lifelong learning.

The five required courses are:

  • EITHER EDU 8000 College Student Development Theory (fall) OR EDU 8618 Adolescent Psychology (fall)
  • EITHER EDU 8673 Philosophy of Education (summer, fall) OR EDU 8672 Instructional Leadership (spring) OR EDU 8644 Leadership in Higher Education
  • EDU 8696 Internship/Practicum (fall)
  • EDU 8647 Sports and Education (spring)
  • EDU 8680 Coaching Athletes with Character & Ethics (summer, fall)

Students can pursue an additional 15 credits of required coursework to earn a MA in Education, a MA in Education, with a Concentration in Teacher Leadership, or a MA with concentration in Higher Education Leadership.
